What is a Phlebotomist?
Phlebotomy technicians, or phlebotomists, are trained healthcare professionals who collect blood samples through venipuncture and micro collection. They play a vital role on the clinical laboratory team, preparing specimens, verifying patient records, and ensuring accurate testing.
Phlebotomists work in hospitals, physician offices, laboratories, blood banks, and other healthcare settings, usually under the supervision of medical technologists or laboratory managers. Their responsibilities may also include interviewing and screening blood donors.
Dallas College’s program combines classroom instruction with hands-on clinical experience, giving you the skills to perform blood collection safely and effectively. Upon completion, students are eligible to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification exam, preparing them for this essential healthcare career.
The Phlebotomy Technician program has its own admissions process, timeline and requirements. Visit the School of Health Sciences Information Packets and Sessions page to view the Phlebotomy Technician information packets.
