Prabin Dhakal

Prabin Dhakal, who was born in Nepal and raised in Japan, came to the United States for college. He started off at a university in South Dakota, but quickly realized that Dallas College is the place to be.

“The best thing about Dallas College is all of the opportunities provided," he said. “Whenever I go to the Dallas College website, or open my email, there is always opportunities for students." Dhakal took full advantage of one of those opportunities, participating in the Texas Cup Pitch Competition in Spring 2023. It was a Shark Tank-like competition in which students pitched their business ideas. Dhakal presented his idea of an app called MindCraft Academy, which would help students improve their mentality and combat mental health-related issues.

The judges loved the idea and Dhakal moved on to the semifinals and eventually the finals where he pitched the idea at the SMU+GSV Mission Summit. Dhakal was one of 12 finalists. “I didn't win, but I know what I have to do next time. It was a great experience," he said. Dhakal is now driven even more to pursue his entrepreneurial dreams thanks to the opportunities provided by Dallas College. And he only sees better days ahead for fellow Dallas College students.

“Within a year or two, I really think Dallas College is going to be a big hub for entrepreneurs," Dhakal said. “Students are really getting exposed right now to all of the opportunities."

As far as being an international student, Dhakal raved about the resources provided and the welcoming environment across the college. He is eager to get to campus every day to interact with his fellow classmates and professors.

“I'm really happy here," he said. “Overall, every teacher, every staff member, every classmate has been really good. It's amazing."

Dallas College student Bachelor’s Degree of Applied Technology
“After being homeschooled and graduating high school with dual credit prerequisites already done, I went straight into the workforce, no intention of getting a degree. I worked in a warehouse for about a year and thought about going into welding, but I injured my back. ... At that point I decided to go for my associate degree, which I accomplished, and now I’m working to get my bachelor’s degree of applied technology in software development this fall. I love that I can do it 100% online because I also take care of my family every day.”
