Melanie Glover

“The two and a half years I spent in this program were some of the best times I’ve ever had. I met so many great people (including my husband!) and made lifelong friends who have changed my entire outlook on life.

“I still remember my first day there. I was scared to death, but those fears quickly diminished once I got into the swing of things. I was interested in the Computer Graphics program because I had always been interested in computer graphics, and I didn’t want to get just a basic associate degree.

“With my Computer Graphics degree, I was able to get a job with the Lancaster Independent School District working in their resource room. While a lot of my days are consumed with copies and laminating, I do get to use my skills in Photoshop and InDesign quite frequently.

“One of the most important things I learned while attending college wasn’t learned from a book, but from a teacher. ‘Mr. Bill’ (Bill Crawford) would always tie real-world experiences into his lessons. The lesson that most stood out to me was to be yourself — you don’t have to conform to what the world tells you — and that has stuck with me ever since.

“There were a few bumps along the way, but I made it through, and I’m proud to say I went to Dallas College!”  Melanie Glover met her husband, Jeremiah, during her studies, where she earned an associate degree in Computer Graphics.

Dallas College student Bachelor’s Degree of Applied Technology
“After being homeschooled and graduating high school with dual credit prerequisites already done, I went straight into the workforce, no intention of getting a degree. I worked in a warehouse for about a year and thought about going into welding, but I injured my back. ... At that point I decided to go for my associate degree, which I accomplished, and now I’m working to get my bachelor’s degree of applied technology in software development this fall. I love that I can do it 100% online because I also take care of my family every day.”

“You should never stop learning in today’s world. If you do, you get left behind like the dinosaurs. Once you have knowledge, though, no one can take it away from you. The most important thing I learned is how to have the tools you need in today’s workforce.”
