SGA Members Celebrate in Style

June 18, 2025
Dallas College Student Government Association brought unprecedented energy and style to downtown Dallas this Spring with its highly anticipated Sneaker Ball-themed Awards Showcase at Fairmont Hotel Regency Ballroom. The ball was held on the heels of the Texas Junior College Student Government Association State Convention in Galveston, where SGA delegates from the college secured 12 awards. Hosted by the Office of Student Life and Engagement (SLE), the event celebrated student leadership, resilience and community while marking the swearing-in ceremony for Student Government Association officers.
The evening captured the personality and diversity that defines the Dallas College student experience. Students, faculty, staff and families from all seven campuses attended the celebration. Attendees embraced the creative dress code, showcasing their favorite sneakers, alongside formal attire, in a display of authentic campus culture.
Honoring Excellence Through the Bobbie Harrison Awards
The evening’s centerpiece was the presentation of the Bobbie Harrison Student Leader of the Year Awards, recognizing exceptional student leaders from each Dallas College campus. Melissa Daniel, the recipient of this year’s award for Cedar Valley Campus, says, “Bringing all seven campuses together is priceless, because we don’t get to do it often. It brings us all together as one big family.”
Student Life and Engagement offers several opportunities throughout the year for students to grow leadership skills and practice the outreach that Daniel describes as a servant heart. At Cedar Valley campus, events such as Uncle Joe’s Cookout and Uncle Joe’s Spring Fling give students the chance to work directly with the President’s Office to support large and widely attended campus events.
Gired Aguilar, this year’s Bobbie Harrison recipient from Mountain View Campus, who is transferring to UNT-Denton, credits SGA for helping students gain new perspectives and courage. Aguilar said SGA bolsters “lessons from the planning process and following through with initiatives and programs.” They take on new challenges knowing that they’ll be fine. “My advisors have communicated with me; they believe in me. I will go forward with that,” Aguilar said.
This year’s award winners for the Bobbie Harrison Student Leader of the Year include:
Brookhaven Campus – Lilian Cordero Lopez
Cedar Valley Campus – Melissa Daniel
Eastfield Campus – Marvellous Adelaku
El Centro Campus – Arbre’Niyia Richardson
Mountain View Campus – Gired Aguilar
North Lake Campus – Subah Ahmed

Thank you to the Bobbie Harrison family, whose ongoing support ensures that student leadership continues to be recognized and celebrated across Dallas College.
