This is an example course sequence for students interested in pursuing the Power Sports and Equipment Technology-Power Equipment Technology Certificate. It does not represent a contract, nor does it guarantee course availability. Following this pathway will help you earn a certificate in Power Equipment Technology. Students must earn at least 25% of the credit hours required for graduation through instruction by Dallas College. See catalog for official certificate requirements.

This program is designed to train students to meet entry-level technician requirements in the field of outdoor power equipment and other small engine mechanical industries. This will include theory, diagnosis, repair, overhaul, and maintenance of engine and accessories used on lawn mowers, garden tractors, chain saws, recreational ATV/UTV, and other small engine powered equipment. Included in this program is the study of fuel, electrical systems, engine overhaul, tune-up, drive systems, and other related equipment service. Throughout the entire program an emphasis is placed on accepted shop techniques used throughout the powered equipment industry. Courses that complete the Power Equipment Technology Certificate and the Power Equipment Occupational Skills Award (OSA) are noted below.

Students pursuing this certificate are waived from the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) standards, but must meet course prerequisites.

  • SMER 1366 – Practicum (or Field Experience)-Small Engine Mechanics and Repair Technology/Technician This is the capstone course for this award.
