The Associate of Arts in Teaching (A.A.T.) is a Board-approved collegiate degree program consisting of lower-division courses intended for transfer to baccalaureate programs that lead to initial Texas teacher certification. This plan is for those who are interested in earning certification to teach Early Childhood through Grade 6 (EC-6), in a generalist classroom setting.

This pathway is an example course sequence for students interested in teaching EC-6. Following this pathway will help you earn an A.A.T. degree EC-6 that will transfer and apply to the baccalaureate degrees in Teacher Education Certification programs at Dallas College, Texas A&M University-Commerce (TAMU-Commerce), and Texas Tech University. Students must earn at least 25% of the credit hours (15 hours) required for graduation through instruction by Dallas College. See catalog for official degree requirements.

This pathway fulfills the Dallas College Interstate Passport requirements. The Interstate Passport at Dallas College is awarded to students who have achieved lower-division general education learning outcomes in a set of approved courses that are recognized by all other colleges and universities participating. Please visit the Interstate​ Passport – Dallas College webpage for more information. Certain courses may not apply to the Passport block requirements.  See your success coach for more information.

SEMESTER 1

ENGL 1301 – Composition I This is a Core course. Must earn a grade of “C" or higher.

HIST 1301 – United States History I This is a Core course.

TECA 1354 – Child Growth and Development* This is a Core course.

CHOOSE ONE:

  • SPCH 1315 – Public Speaking* This is a Core course. OR
  • SPCH 1321 – Business and Professional Communication* This is a Core course.

CHOOSE ONE:

  • BIOL 1408 – Biology for Non-Science Majors I* This is a Core course. OR
  • BIOL 2406 – Environmental Biology* This is a Core course.

SEMESTER 1 ACTION ITEMS

  1. Meet with your success coach to confirm your academic and career goals by the end of the semester.
  2. Meet with your success coach to research career options with a Teaching degree.
  3. Meet with a faculty advisor or success coach regarding observation placement for the EDUC 1301 course.
  4. Begin researching where you want to seek Teacher Certification in grades EC-6 (Dallas College, TAMU-Commerce, or Texas Tech).

ENGL 1302 – Composition II This is a Core course.

MATH 1314 – College Algebra This is a Core course. Must earn a grade of “C" or higher.

EDUC 1301 – Introduction to the Teaching Profession

CHOOSE ONE:

  • GEOL 1401 – Earth Sciences for Non-Science Majors I* This course satisfies EC-6 degree. OR
  • GEOL 1403 – Physical Geology* This course satisfies 4-8 and Special Ed EC-12 degree.

SEMESTER 2 ACTION ITEMS

  1. Meet with your success coach to request an official program of study audit and confirm or update your academic/career pathway and program of study.
  2. Ask your success coach about your options to pursue the bachelor's degree at Dallas College, TAMU-Commerce, or Texas Tech.
  3. Meet with a faculty advisor or the teacher preparation department regarding observation placement for the EDUC 2301 course.

ENGL 2331 – World Literature* This is a Core course. This is not an eligible Dallas College Interstate Passport block course.

  1. Meet with your success coach to apply for one or more of the following:
    1. The Dallas College Educator Preparation Program. More information about can be found on the School of Education Website.
    2. Admission to TAMU-Commerce
    3. Admission to Texas Tech.
  2. Begin applying for Financial Aid and Scholarships. You can start the FAFSA in October for the next academic year. (i.e., in October 2022, you can complete the FAFSA if you plan to register for classes at any college or university in Fall 2023).
  3. Check with your success coach for important deadlines and dates.

IF YOU WANT TO COMPLETE THE BAS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND TEACHING AT DALLAS COLLEGE:

  • Begin familiarizing and preparing yourself for the required EPP entrance exams. (Pending SBEC & TEA Approval)
  • Meet with the teacher preparation department to discuss internship opportunities required for upper-level coursework.
  • Meet with your success coach to declare your program of study in the B.A.S. ECE.
