This is an example course sequence for students interested in pursuing Social Work Associate-Generalist. It does not represent a contract, nor does it guarantee course availability. Following this pathway will help you earn an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Social Work Associate-Generalist. Students must earn at least 25% of the credit hours (15 hours) required for graduation through instruction by Dallas College. See catalog for official degree requirements.

The A.A.S. degree is designed to prepare individuals interested in working with people to obtain entry-level employment in public and private social service agencies. The social service worker is equipped with skills, knowledge, values, and sensitivity to effectively serve human needs in a variety of community settings. Courses that complete the degree, the Human Services Certificate (HS) and the Gerontology Certificate (G1) are noted below.

SEMESTER 1

SCWK 1321 – Orientation to Social Services (Course also applies to HS)

SCWK 2311 – Interviewing and Counseling Theories (Course also applies to HS)

SCWK 2331 – Abnormal Behavior (Course also applies to HS)

PSYC 2301 – General Psychology This is a Core course.

ENGL 1301 – Composition I This is a Core course. Must earn a grade of “C" or higher.

  2. Meet with a career advisor or coach to research your career options and opportunities for job shadowing.

BIOL 1322 – Nutrition and Diet Therapy This is a Core course. Must earn a grade of “C" or higher.

CHOOSE ONE:   

  • SCWK 1365 Practicum (or Field Experience)-Social Work (Required course for HS certificate) OR
  • GERS 2366 Practicum (or Field Experience)-Adult Development and Aging (Required course for G1 certificate)**

* There are several options to fulfill this requirement. See your academic advisor for a specific list.

** For the A.A.S. degree in Social Work you can complete GERS 2366 OR SCWK 1365; only GERS 2366 will apply toward Gerontology Certificate.

  2. Meet with your advisor to apply for the Social Work Associate-Generalist A.A.S., Human Services Certificate and the Gerontology Certificate.
