This is an example course sequence for students interested in pursuing the Health Information Technology Medical Coder Certificate. It does not represent a contract, nor does it guarantee course availability. Following this pathway will help you earn a Level I Certificate in Health Information Technology Medical Coder Certificate. Students must earn at least 25% of the credit hours required for graduation through instruction by Dallas College. See catalog for official certificate requirements.
The Medical Coder Certificate Program is a 32 credit-hour program that prepares students with the technical skills and knowledge needed for successful entry-level coding positions in a variety of health care settings. The program provides training in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, computers and health information systems, legal and ethical aspects of health information, and coding and reimbursement methodologies The curriculum also provides a foundation for students to prepare and complete the coding certification exams offered by AHIMA and AAPC.
Students pursuing this certificate are waived from the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) standards, but must meet course prerequisites, as long as the student completes the TSI waiver form prior to enrollment.
