This is an example course sequence for students interested in pursuing the Emergency Medical Services – Emergency Medical Technician Basic Certificate. It does not represent a contract, nor does it guarantee course availability. Following this pathway will help you earn the Basic Certificate in Emergency Medical Services – Emergency Medical Technician. Students must earn at least 25% of the credit hours required for graduation through instruction by Dallas College. See catalog for official certificate requirements.
The Level I Certificate combines classroom teaching with supervised clinical and field experience for those seeking certification as an Emergency Medical Technician – Basic with the Texas Department of State Health Services. Upon successful completion of all course work for the certificate, the student is eligible to take the exam for registration as an Emergency Medical Technician – Basic through the National Registry of EMT. Upon successful completion of that examination, the student is eligible to apply for certification as an EMT-Basic in the State of Texas. Courses that complete the Emergency Medical Technician Basic Certificate are noted below.
Students pursuing this certificate are waived from the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) standards, but must meet course prerequisites, as long as the student completes the TSI waiver form prior to enrollment.

EMSP 1501 – Emergency Medical Technician
EMSP 1164 – Practicum (or Field Experience)-Emergency Medical Technology/Technician (EMT Paramedic) This is the capstone course for this award.
ENGL 1301 – Composition I This is a Core course. You must earn a grade of "C" or better.
CHOOSE ONE:
- EMSP 1391 – Special Topics in Emergency Medical Technology/Technician OR
- EMSP 1305 – Emergency Care Attendant High School Dual Credit Option
CHOOSE ONE:
- SPCH 1311 – Introduction to Speech Communication This is a Core course. OR
- SPCH 1315 – Public Speaking This is a Core course.
CHOOSE ONE:
- MATH 1314 – College Algebra This is a Core course. You must earn a grade of "C" or better. OR
- MATH 1332 – Contemporary Mathematics (Quantitative Reasoning) This is a Core course. You must earn a grade of "C" or better.
