Chemistry is involved in all human activities, from growing and cooking food to launching a space shuttle. Understanding at least basic chemistry is critical for medical fields, most science-related professions, and diverse careers from industry to government and academia. The guided pathway in Chemistry will provide a foundation for you to complete courses toward an Associate of Science (A.S.) that will help you transfer to the University of North Texas (UNT) to earn a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. The bachelor's degree in Chemistry opens the door to a career in laboratory sciences, industry, education, environmental establishments, and many more areas.
This is an example course sequence for students interested in pursuing Chemistry. It does not represent a contract, nor does it guarantee course availability. Following this pathway will help you earn an A.S. degree, which will increase your chances of transfer to bachelor's-level programs at UNT. Courses that complete the degree are noted below. Students must earn at least 25% of the credit hours (15 hours) required for graduation through instruction by Dallas College. See catalog for official degree requirements.
Visit www.dcccd.edu/transfer and select “Transfer from Dallas College" then click on UNT to view more information about transferring to that institution. Speak with your success coach to choose courses that will help you pursue Chemistry as a major at UNT.

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry requires a minor of at least 18 hours, of which 6 hours must be advanced. The plan below gives places for six minor 3-hour courses, of which two are advanced (that is, at either the 3000- or 4000-level). However, the actual number of additional courses at UNT depends on the choice of minor. If less than 6 courses are required, those classes can be replaced by electives. The options for a minor are:
- Mathematics: requires 2 extra advanced classes
- Computer Science: requires 6 extra classes, including 2 advanced classes
- Physics: requires 3 extra advanced classes and 1 advanced lab
- Biology: requires 5 extra classes and 2 extra labs, including 2 advanced classes and 1 advanced lab
- Geology: requires 6 extra classes, including 2 advanced classes
- Materials Science: requires 6 advanced classes.
