This is an example course sequence for students interested in pursuing the Perioperative Nursing Enhanced Skills Certificate at El Centro College. This guided pathway does not represent a contract, nor does it guarantee course availability. Following this pathway will help you earn the Perioperative Nursing Enhanced Skills Certificate. Students must earn at least 25% of the credit hours required for graduation through instruction by Dallas College. See catalog for official certificate requirements.

This two-semester program offers registered and graduate nurses the opportunity to acquire additional theory and skills required for patient care in the surgical setting. The perioperative approach to patient care is employed. Principles of surgical asepsis, patient care, use of surgical supplies and equipment, and ethical/legal aspects are presented. The emphasis of the program is on the scrub and circulating roles in perioperative nursing. Nurses enrolled in this program must hold a current license from the Board on Nursing for the State of Texas or be a graduate of a nursing program eligible for the next NCLEX-RN examination.

The Associate Degree Nursing A.A.S. offered by the El Centro Campus is a requirement proior to this Enhanced Skills Certificate. Speak with an academic advisor at your college to choose courses that will help you to transfer to a specific university.

  1. Hold a current license from the Board on Nursing for the State of Texas or be a graduate of a nursing program eligible for the next NCLEX-RN examination.
  2. Current CPR certification

SRGT 1340 – Perioperative Nursing

SRGT 1167 – Practicum (or Field Experience) – Surgical Technology/Technologist

SEMESTER 1 ACTION ITEMS

  1. Meet with your advisor to confirm academic and career goals before the end of the semester.
  2. Meet with a career advisor or coach to research your career options and opportunities for job shadowing.

SRGT 1441 – Surgical Procedures I

SRGT 1343 – Perioperative Nursing II Course contains the exam capstone for this program.

SRGT 2366 – Practicum (or Field Experience) - Surgical Technology/Technologist

SRGT 1166 – Practicum (or Field Experience) - Surgical Technology/Technologist This is the capstone course for the award.

SEMESTER 2 ACTION ITEMS

  1. After reviewing your degree plan and program of study, meet with your advisor to apply for the Perioperative Nursing Enhanced Skills Certificate.
